What this guide is — and what it is not
This is an evergreen guide: it explains how things work, what to compare, and when to act, so you can reuse it season after season. It is deliberately not a newsletter, an events calendar, or a directory of dated listings. Prices, hours, program names, and registration dates change — so this guide does not print them. Where a detail can change, the guide tells you what to check and where to check it (usually the official park, venue, or camp website) instead of guessing.
It covers three questions local parents ask again and again:
- Where should we go? — a durable guide to long-established public parks in the Potomac / Bethesda / Rockville area, and what makes each one good for kids.
- Where should we host the party? — how to compare birthday venue types (nature centers, farms, indoor play, pools, art studios), what to ask, and a planning timeline you can reuse for any venue.
- When do we need to sign up? — how camp registration timelines actually work in Montgomery County, what to prepare before a window opens, and a month-by-month planning calendar.

Potomac-Area Parks Guide for Families
Cabin John Regional Park, Glen Echo Park, Brookside Gardens, Falls Road Local Park, and Rock Creek Regional Park — what each park is known for, what tends to work well for kids, and how to pick based on the day you want to have. Plus rainy-day alternatives.
Birthday Party Venues: A Type-by-Type Guide
Compare venue categories instead of chasing listings: what is typically included, capacity and booking lead times, the questions to ask before you book, and an 8-weeks-out to day-of planning timeline.
Camp Registration Timelines in Montgomery County
The evergreen asset: how county and private camp registration windows generally work, what to prepare in advance (accounts, forms, deposit readiness), a month-by-month planning calendar, and a printable decision worksheet.
How to use this guide well
- Start with the timeline, not the listing. Most local-parent stress comes from timing — a registration window or a venue calendar that filled before you looked. The camp and birthday pages are built around lead times for exactly that reason.
- Verify the changeable details at the source. Hours, fees, availability, and registration dates belong to the official park, venue, or program site. This guide tells you what to verify; it does not freeze a number that may already have changed.
- Reuse the checklists. The questions-to-ask lists and the camp decision worksheet are designed to be copied into your own notes and used every year.
